ASK ME anything

Below are some questions that were posed to DJW on his Instagram during a Q&A session.

What got you into DJing?

My interest in DJing was sparked by my dad, who was a DJ himself. He has some great memories and plenty of funny stories from his time in the industry. He always encouraged me to DJ as at least a side hustle, as he said it could lead to some amazing opportunities and was a great way to earn some extra money. He also advocated that I would learn things about myself through DJing that I wouldn't necessarily discover in a conventional 9-5 job and he was 100% right.

Do you listen to podacasts?

Yes. I spend a lot of time in the car, on the road, and if I’m not listening to my couple’s playlist they’ve submitted or listening to new music, then I’ll draw for a podcast. I also typically tend to listen to a podcast or sit in silence on the way home from a DJ booking to give my ears a little bit of a rest. The ‘TalkOver Podcast’ is my favourite.

What would you do for a living if you werent a dj?

Believe it or not, DJing is something I do on the side. What started as a hobby gradually became a more serious pursuit, leading me to where I am today. In addition to my DJing, I am also the co-owner of an independent tool hire company, which I run alongside my dad, uncle, and cousin. Maybe one day the family business will be my side hustle!

In your opinion, What’s the best thing about djing?

There’s a couple of things that I really enjoy about DJing. The 1st one is where I start to mix the next song in and just as it drops, I hear that excited scream from the crowd knowing they love the song. Especially if it’s a song that I love too. This may sound a bit corny, but the second thing I love about DJing, especially at weddings, is knowing that I've contributed to making someone's big day unforgettable. Positive feedback has always been gratifying, but after recently getting married myself, I now understand on a deeper level just how important my role is as the DJ. It's incredibly rewarding to see and feel the genuine appreciation from people when you've done a great job.

In your opinion, What’s the worst thing about djing?

It’s hard to find faults in what I do, as I'm essentially being paid to play music. However, the less enjoyable aspects include loading my equipment in and out of venues, setting it up, and packing it down after a long night. With juggling two jobs, it’s not uncommon for my day to start at 6 am and end as late as 3 am the following morning. Occasionally, I encounter a rude guest, but I’m fortunate that this has been a rare occurrence throughout my DJ career.

Whats the funniest thing that’s happened when you’re djing? I bet you’ve seen some sights.

Putting me on the spot now. It’s difficult to pinpoint just one thing and I also want to keep it clean but being sober in a room full of drunk people, you’re always going to see some sights! A fairly common one is the execution of The Dirty Dancing lifts. I’ve only ever seen it pretty much nailed the once but they usually end up either on the floor or with some kind of wardrobe malfunction. Luckily, no one has every been seriously injured.

Is there any dj’s that you look up to?

I wouldn’t say ‘look up to’ but I definitely have some favourites for different reasons. To name a few…

Stxylo - DJ Dubl - Martin 2 Smooth - DJ Cee B - DJ Joe Lobel - DJ Darkozy

what’s your favourite type of dj booking?

To be honest, I love the variety of DJ bookings I receive, and I go through phases where I have different preferences. While I enjoy spinning R&B and hip-hop at student nights and performing at amazing corporate events like P!nk, UEFA, TC Fest, and Kellanova, I must say that weddings are my favourite. Everyone is dressed to impress and on their best behaviour for the newlyweds. Plus, by the time I start, most guests have had a few drinks, which usually adds to the fun atmosphere.
